Rafting in Uttarakhand

The snow fed rivers especially in the Garhwal region offer exciting opportunities for the water sport lovers. The awesome might of the river Ganga with its origin in the Himalayas has attracted the adventurer to this challenging sport. There exists popular water range from from grade 2 – 3 for amateur to the bigger challenges of grade 4 – 6  for experts. The waters of River Alkananda and Bhagirathi meeting at Deoprayag to form the Ganga are grade 4 – 5 that calls for experienced river runners. The streach of almost 70 Kms downstream of Deoprayag offers a number of grade 3 and two grade 4 rapids.

The option range from half day to the longer 4 – 5 days trips organized and managed by State owned GMVN and KMVN and score of private professional agencies.

Rishikesh is now considered as the main centre of Rafting. Almost all the camps that organize rafting are located 15 – 40 Kms from Rishikesh on the way to Srinagar. Sandy beaches along the river allows river rafters to camp on after an exciting day on the water. The slopes on the either sides are covered with oak, pine, spruce and fir, with a chance to see a village and its people. To add to the spiritual experience, quite a good number of retreats and ashrams overlook the river. The best period for rafting on the Ganga is between October to May. 140 Kms from Mussoorie, a tributary of River Yamuna, River Tons also offers enjoyable rafting experience.
