Waste Management by Young Minds of Rishikesh

Zero Waste Inc. collects waste from door-to-door and segregates it in Rishikesh. Creating awareness, Kitchen and Horticulture waste composting, and waste recycling is also their main objective

How common is this for us to yell at the government and people for creating waste? To always compare India with Europe and America for their clean roads and environment. Yet, there are few people among us who choose a different way of looking at the situation.

There is a group of 5 nature concerned young minds: Amit Lingwal, Himanshu Patwal, Vineet Thakur, Surya Pratap Chauhan and Piyush Dangwal, who came together to start ‘Zero Waste Incorporation’ in Rishikesh to clean the waste. The team of Zero Waste Inc. simply believes that ‘Waste is everyone’s problem because everyone creates it’.

The organization is dedicated to provide recycling waste services in Rishikesh. They collect waste from door to door and in return, every household pays them Rs 30 for their services. But their job does not end there. They dispatch bio and non-biodegradable waste to their recycling destinations. The waste is sorted out with hands and proper recycling methods are depending on their type: dry or wet and biodegradable or non-biodegradable.

Areas like Muni Ki Reti, Chauda Biga, Dhalwala, Avas Vikas, Ganga Vihar , Sai Vihar, Shishamjhadi, Veer bhadra marg, Bharat Vihar, Ugra sen Marg and many others are covered by them.

A year old organization has expanded its work reach from door to door services to public events. To create awareness among masses they organize clean-up group events which include school students also. One of the achievements of this newly established organization is that it is the official coordinator of Clean India Campaign (Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan). Regional newspapers have also appreciated their work in Rishikesh and nearby areas.

Zero waste is the model accepted by many state and regional governments. It is the need of the society which is not only the responsibility of government but ours also. As Gandhi has said, “Be the change you want to see in the world”.
